“Friendly” thieves steal phone

Ryan had his phone stolen while smoking a cigarette on the street outside of his hotel. Pickpockets in Spain are often very discrete, and victims may not realise immediately that they’ve been robbed. Ryan was approached by two locals—they seemed friendly and briefly chatted with him. One asked Ryan for a cigarette, while the other kicked around a soccer ball. The man with the soccer ball bumped into Ryan and apologised profusely before walking away. When Ryan had finished his cigarette he went to check the time on his phone and realised that it was no longer in his pocket. He called the local police reporting the theft and then called his travel insurance provider, who covered the loss of Ryan’s phone.
